Republic Wireless released the Moto X this month, offering their customers a huge step up from the only available phone until now, the Defy XT. New and existing customers can buy the Moto X for $299 with no contract. This is a huge discount in cost, as the full price from Motorola is $599.

For those unaware, Republic Wireless offers a hybrid phone and calling plans. Their phones are designed to run over wifi the majority of the time. When a wifi signal is not available, the phones default to the Sprint Network. The chief complaints among beta users until this month’s Moto X release was the poor selection of phones, the quality of the Defy XT, and the dropped calls when switching from wifi to cellular. Republic Wireless seems to have answered the critics with the Moto X.

The Moto X is a light years ahead of the Defy XT. Aside from the Moto X’s technical spec, which have already been reviewed across the web, Republic Wireless’s updated platform (a custom ROM) remedies the dropped call issue. New Moto X users report a seamless transition from wifi to cellular during a call.

Republic Wireless’s Moto X isn’t available in the custom colors offered by AT&T and other cellular vendors. It’s currently only available in black and white.

Cell phone users that have been gun shy in the past because of lengthy contracts commitments can now get a cellular plan starting at $5. Plans are as follows –

  • Unlimited talk, text, and data, on WiFi only – $5/month
  • Unlimited talk and text on WiFi and cellular, and unlimited data on WiFi – $10/month
  • Unlimited talk, text and data on WiFi, plus 3G cellular – $25/month
  • Unlimited talk, text and data on WiFi, plus 4G LTE cellular – $40/month

Republic Wireless also allows their users to switch plans up to two times per month, instantly from their phones. So if a user lives in an area that does have 4G but will be traveling to an area that does, they can change their plan from 4G to 3G and then back again when they return home. One restriction to be noted, if a user happens to exceed 5GB of data usage in one month, Republic Wireless will slow that user’s data speed.

If the Moto X on Republic Wireless lives up to the hype, market experts agree these types of plans and calling features will become more and more the norm. Traditional cell phone companies will find it hard to compete with their lengthy contracts and restrictions on data usage.
